Jordan Byrd Scholarships-2015

TCEF
SCHOLARSHIP ALERT!!!  JORDAN M. BYRD SILVER STAR AND MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

I love this scholarship!  It is such a great way to remember a local hero and to provide Tooele County students with a way to fulfill their dreams of higher education.  Jordan Byrd lived in Tooele County and was a student at Grantsville High School.  He excelled in his schooling, serving as the Senior Class President, member of the National Honor Society, and captain of his baseball team. He joined the army with the hope of  training as a Combat Medic, and eventually a medical doctor.  During his training he married and his son, Ayden, was born September 9, 2010.  Four days later, Jordan was deployed to Afghanistan.  On October 13, 2010, Jordan was killed in action while shielding one of his squad members with his body.  Jordan’s dream of being a husband, father, son and doctor was silenced unexpectedly.  Jordan received the Combat Medic Medal, the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, and the Silver Star awards for giving his life while caring for a fellow soldier on the battle field.

I remember the day of Jordan’s funeral. My family and I joined with many people on the main street of Grantsville as they brought Jordan’s body to the cemetery.  My daughter was a cheerleader then,  and the football team and cheerleaders, dressed in their Grantsville uniforms,  lined the road into the cemetery to pay honor to Jordan before they left for their game that day.   It was a really beautiful and emotional experience…one that I will remember always.

In appreciation of the community that supported him,  and in honor of his memory, Jordan’s families and the Tooele Education Foundation have collaborated in the creation and implementation of a memorial scholarship program.  These scholarships are for seniors who are interested in the medical field and value patriotism, just like Jordan did.
