Utah Girls’ State-2015

Would you enjoy a fast-paced, fun week where you will learn about city, county, and state government?  A week that will change the course of your life, open doors for scholarships and entrance to our military academies and colleges across the county?  A week where you will leave with memories and friendships that will last a lifetime?  If the answer is YES, come to a presentation on Wednesday, February 4th during both 1st and 2nd lunches.  Meet in the Front Office.

Girls State is a fantastic program that provides Junior Girls with the opportunity to spend a week at Weber State University learning about the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of citizenship.  It is a great way to learn more about the government, but Girls State also gives you the opportunity to spend a week on a college campus and experience life as a college student:  living in dorms, eating in a cafeteria, attending classes, etc.  Participating in Girls State not only looks great on college and scholarship applications, it also means you are eligible to apply for scholarships while you are there.  Last year, one of our THS Girls State attendees received a $1,100 scholarship to the college of her choice

Many years ago, I participated in Girls State and was elected Maw City Treasurer and County Assessor (still not really sure what that is?).  I really did not have a lot of interest in government or politics, but I still had a great experience…and I left with a 1/2 tuition scholarship!  You might not have a lot of interest in government or politics either, but as American citizens, we all need to have a basic understanding of how our government works, as well as a deep appreciation for our Constitutional rights and privileges.

If you are interested in participating in Girls State, there will be an informational meeting during 1st and 2nd lunches on Wednesday, February 4th, 2015, in the Conference Room in the Front Office.  Jennifer Hinton, a fellow Girls State Alumni, as well as last year’s participants will be available to give your information and answer any questions you might have.
