The University of Utah College of Engineering is excited to present their annual engineering summer camp for high school girls. This year, a residential component has been added as well, providing students with a great opportunity to spend a week on a college campus. These type of college events look great on scholarship applications as well!
Hi-GEAR is designed to expose young women to a variety of engineering and computer science careers with hands-on experiential learning and collaborative team projects. Some past activities include: building trebuchets for launching water balloons, making perfume using distillation, programming and racing robots, extracting DNA, and touring University research labs. Participants interact with Hi-GEAR mentors (female college engineering students, female faculty and staff) who guide them though this program. Participants will also have the opportunity to earn scholarships to study engineering as a college student at the University of Utah!
The U of U is seeking enthusiastic female high school students who are currently in 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grades to participate in this program. Applicants should enjoy math and science and be interested in exploring their academic potential (while having fun in the process). Unlike other programs, the Hi-GEAR experience is designed with each individual participant in mind. In addition, each student receives on-going, personal attention from program staff and interns. Therefore, a maximum of 24-26 students will be selected to participate. Students will be selected from a personal statement and teacher/advisor recommendation, with consideration for school representation and student background.
If you are interested in Hi-GEAR, make sure you get your application in soon because there are a limited number of spots available as well as a limited number of scholarships available for students to attend the camp.
