The Regents’ scholarship is now accepting applications.  Please review the program guide to make sure that you have taken all required courses and that you follow the application process very carefully.

Also remember that the application for Utah Scholars opened on November 1st.  This is your chance to earn the Utah Scholars medallion for graduation. The process to receive the Utah Scholars medallion is not difficult and many of you have already completed most of the requirements.  If you have not completed them all, now is your chance!

It is College Application Week!

If you were/are unable to get to the computer lab (#303) during your scheduled time, please contact your counselor or me to come in during another time.

Keep in mind the idea of “1, 2, 4 or more.” Whether you are going to a four year college or a 1 year program, this is the time to apply.  Tooele Tech, SLCC, and Snow all have some great programs to get you training or degrees.  It doesn’t just have to be four years, it can certainly be 1 year, two years, 4 or more.  We just want you to do something after high school and that looks different for everyone.

Two Utah Scholarship Opportunities

Jiffy Lube is offering two $6500 dollar scholarships and four $1500 dollar scholarships.  Students write an short essay about “What drives You.” There are two different essay’s that can be written so please make sure to read through the description of each.

Deadline: March 19, 2018 and April 16, 2018
-Students ages 15-18 and attending high school
-U.S. Citizen
-Jiffy Lube employees and immediate family are not eligible to apply
-Students entering either a two year or four year college after high school
Award: Two $6500 dollar awards and four $1500 dollar awards

ACLU of Utah is offering a $1500 dollar scholarship to seniors who have taken action to protect civil liberties.

Deadline: January 22, 2018
-Be a Utah resident
-A high school senior planning to attend a four year college full time
-Have proof of strong civil liberties through some form of activism addressing issues of equality, racial justice, free speech, tolerance and privacy

Drive Smart, No Distractions, No Excuses, Teen Digital Short Contest (student age 13-18)
Deadline: December 18, 2017
-U.S. citizen or legal resident
-Student age 13-18
The entry must be a digital short that is at least 15 seconds but no longer than 60 seconds in length.  The video must try to convince teens about the dangers of distracted driving and the importance of not texting and driving.
Award: up to $10,000

Alpine Recovery Lodge Bi-Annual Scholarship Essay Contest (seniors)

USU Open House and Other Events

USU is holding another open house tomorrow night at the South Town Expo Center if you are interested in finding out more about USU.  If you apply before you go, you may qualify for on the spot scholarships! Admissions staff will be there to help you decide if this school is the right one for you.  There will be lots of Aggie swag to be given away and there is nothing better than some free Aggie ice cream.

Aggie Leadership Extravaganza is a fun-filled day of leadership activities designed for high school seniors involved in any type of leadership. High school leaders from around Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming participate in various workshops and activities facilitated by our student ambassadors.

Red Riot registration:

This is a great way for any high school student to experience Southern Utah University as you spend the weekend with one of our student Ambassadors! For only $20, each Red Riot Overnight includes the following:

  • Tour of campus
  • Meals (Friday evening & Saturday morning)
  • Overnight accommodations
  • Tickets to SUU events
  • Information about classes
  • T-shirt to remember the event
  • Scholarship advising & much more

Parents are invited to attend a customized parent information session and campus tour on Friday of the Overnight. No lodging arrangements can be made for parents in University Housing. Discounts for local hotels can be found at Parent Services.

Here are a few scholarships that I would love to see our students applying for.  These are due either by the end of the month or the beginning of the month in December. I still have not had anyone apply for the Comcast Leaders and Achievers Award, so get those applications in!

Deadline: November 7, 2017
-High school students who are making a difference through volunteerism.
-Legal resident of one of the 50 states of the United States or the District of Columbia.
-Must have engaged in a volunteer activity that occurred at least in part after September 1, 2016.
-Must complete an application and submit certification to Mrs. Dangerfield or Mr. Hamm by November 7, 2017.
Award: State–$1,000 & trip to Washington D.C.

Deadline: November 10, 2017 (Portfolio to THS)
                   November 30, 2017 (Application to Comcast)
-Student nominated by high school counselor or Principal after portfolio has been viewed.
-Plan to attend college, university, vocational or technical school in the U.S.
-Demonstrate leadership abilities in school activities or through work experience.
-Strong commitment to and involvement in community service.
-GPA of 2.8 or higher.
-Full-time high school senior.
Award: $1,000
-Cover page: Name, photo, name of scholarship
-Leadership, service and work experience: Include dates, total hours and brief explanation.
-Copy of your official transcript, including ACT scores.
-2 letters of recommendation.
-All information must be typed and submitted in a paper or plastic binder. (not three ring)

-Graduating in 2017-2018 academic year
-Complete FAFSA application for 2018-2019 (will need SAR & EFC numbers)
-Be a resident of CO, NM, UT, or WY
-Demonstrate financial need
-Earn an ACT composite score of 17 or higher
Award: Varies from student to student; renewable up to 4 academic years

-Any high school senior who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to apply.
-Applicants need not be related to a member of the Elks
-Applicants must be citizens of the United States on the date their applications are signed; permanent legal resident status does not qualify.
-Male and female students compete separately
-Take either the ACT or SAT before November 4, 2017, in order to qualify for the MVS Scholarship.
Award: Varies (last year it was up to 50,000)

Criteria for Base Award:
-Complete the Utah Scholars Core Course of Study during 9-12 grades
-Have a cumulative 3.0 high school GPA
-Have at least one reported ACT test score
-Have no grade on official transcript lower than a”C” in core courses
-Be a U.S. citizen, or a non-citizen eligible for federal student aid
-No criminal record
Enroll full-time (15 credits) at an eligible Utah institution of higher education during the fall semester after graduation.
Criteria for Exemplary Academic Achievement Award:
-Must meet the Base Award requirements
-Have a cumulative 3.5 GPA
-Have no grade on official transcript lower than a “B” in core courses
-Have an ACT score of 26
*Core Courses:
-4 credit of English
-4 progressive credits of mathematics
-3.5 credits of Social Science
-3 credits of lab based Science
-2 progressive credits of same World or Classical Language, other than English, during 9-12 grade.
Award: Base Award–$1,000
Exemplary Academic Achievement Award: $1,250 per semester for 4 semesters.

 December 1, 2017 
-Create a video that shows the value of sound money management in a way that will appeal to other teens.
Award: $1,000, $2,500, or $5,000 (3 national awards) and video posted on YouTube as part of a national campaign.

Deadline:  December 1, 2017

-This award recognizes young women between the ages of 14 and 17 who make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts.
-These are merit awards and are NOT based on academic achievement.
-The Violet Richardson Award Program underscores Soroptimist’s commitment to volunteerism and to young women – the leaders of the future.
Award:  Varies, up to $2,500

All of November is College Knowledge Month.  Throughout this month, we will be promoting a college going culture and so here is some information on what to expect!

College Awareness Week
November 6th-10th

Monday November 6th-Tooele Tech will be here during 1st and 2nd lunch

Tuesday November 7th-USU Logan and USU Tooele will be here during 1st and 2nd lunch (Utah vs. BYU rivalry day, wear your Utah or BYU apparel, no hats please)

Wednesday November 8th-The Military will be here during 1st and 2nd lunch

Thursday November 9th-Weber State University will be here during 1st and 2nd lunch (Wear your college apparel day, no hats please)

Friday November 10th-USU Tooele and the Military will be here during 1st and 2nd lunch.

Each morning with the announcements, we will be having trivia questions about college.  Students can enter their answers at lunch for a chance to win some college swag.

Utah College Application Week (UCAW)
November 13th-17th 

Students will be applying to colleges in the computers lab in the IA building, room 303.  The English teachers will be sending students to apply during their English classes.  A few of the colleges will be waiving application fees.

Remember to bring or remember social security numbers, drivers license number and a form of payment.  You can bring a credit/debit card or you can prepay your college application fees at the finance office.  Application fees vary between $35 dollars and $50 dollars so save your money! Also, finding the right fit for college is extremely important.  Now is a great time to research the different Utah schools to see what they have to offer.
